Time has expired for the camera-equipped automated downtown parking meters. Following months of pressure from business owners and City Council members, Mayor Joe Ganim’s administration is scrapping the high-tech equipment that helped issue fines by mail.
Sections of Court Street now feature parking meters that are able to accept credit cards as payment as part of a pilot program. Ron Lucas, the Athens deputy service-safety director, said the meters are located on the east side of Court Street between Union and Washington streets. They are also located on the west side of Court Street between Washington and State streets.
