Charleston, S.C. (WCIV) — The City of Charleston voted in March to double parking meter rates and extend the hours of enforcement from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.
But many parking meters downtown are still displaying old prices, and old pay times.
City of Charleston’s Director of the Department of Traffic and Transportation, Randall “Keith” Benjamin II, says he’s aware of the issue, and that it stems from a software problem within the meter vendor’s cloud system.
“In early May, we found there were 21 meters that did not receive their notification and Civicsmart worked with us to get that alleviated,” he said.
While spending time downtown, tourist Chrissy Black was confused on why the parking meters were listing different information.
“Our meter says 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the meter in front of us says 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Noticing that some of these meters say nine to six is pretty frustrating,” she said.
Some of the meters also charge $1 per hour instead of the newly voted-on $2 per hour.
Benjamin says he has been in contact with the Civicsmart and the city parking technicians are out daily to make sure the meters are well taken care of.
He says all meters should be repaired by the end of Tuesday, roughly a month after Benjamin said officials noticed the problem. If you believe you were ticketed due to an incorrect meter, you can contact the City of Charleston to resolve the ticket.
