Smart meters introduced in downtown Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — If you’re sick of carrying around change for parking meters, downtown Asheville has the solution for you.New ‘smart meters’ have been installed on Battery Park Avenue outside the Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville.

These meters give drivers the ability to put in coins, use a credit card, or pay via a smartphone app. With the SoCon Tournament this weekend, an estimated 20,000 people will flood the city.

That increase will give city officials a great reading on this new system. A 90-day pilot program is being conducted to how the system fairs on a small scale.

The new technology is expected to be installed across the city starting in July.

The project should take three years to complete.
